How you can use it

A beta, as is

SM AI is in beta. It can break, change, or go away. It comes as is, with no promise that it works, that what it shows from Canvas is complete or current, or that the tutor is right. Check anything that matters against Canvas and your teacher.

It runs on Supabase (the database), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email), Anthropic (the tutor) and Stripe (payments for Plus), and it reads from your school’s Canvas, made by Instructure. When one of them is down, the matching part of the app is down too.

Who can use it

• You have to be 13 or older.
• Anthropic requires API account holders to be 18 or older, so a parent or guardian creates the Claude key. Anthropic bills them for what the tutor uses, typically cents per conversation.
• The Free plan costs nothing from SM AI. Plus is optional and paid; see Billing.

Your work stays yours

Your chats, writing samples, profiles, plans and check-offs are yours. SM AI claims no rights to them beyond storing them and sending them to the services named in the privacy page so the app can work. You can download all of it or delete all of it at any time in Settings → Your account.

Your school’s AI policy wins

The tutor explains, plans and checks drafts. It does not write assignments. Whatever your teacher’s AI policy says is the rule that counts: if a teacher says no AI on an assignment, do not open the tutor for that one. You are responsible for what you turn in.

Your keys

You bring your own Canvas access token and your own Claude key, and only your own. Do not paste anyone else’s token or key, and do not share your account. You can revoke the token in Canvas and the key at console.anthropic.com whenever you want; the app stops working for that part until you add a new one.

Billing

• Plus costs $4.99 a month, billed monthly through Stripe until you cancel. Free stays free.
• The account holder for payments is a parent or guardian. They enter the card on Stripe’s page; card numbers never reach SM AI’s servers.
• Cancel any time in Settings → Plan → Manage or cancel. Plus keeps working to the end of the month already paid for, then the account goes back to Free.
• There are no refunds for partial months.
• Prices may change. You will get at least 30 days’ notice by email and in the app before a new price applies to you.
• Deleting your account cancels Plus at the same time.

What is not allowed

• Going around the rate limits, hammering the app with scripts, or scraping it.
• Trying to reach anyone else’s data, account, keys or Canvas.
• Probing, breaking into, or interfering with the app or the services behind it. If you find a security problem, email the address below instead.
• Pretending to be someone else, including another student or a school.

Suspension

An account used for any of the above can be suspended or removed without notice. Where possible you will get an email saying why.

Ending things

You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Your account. Everything is deleted right away. The beta itself may be paused or shut down; if that happens, there will be a note in the app and time to download your data first.

Liability

This is a beta built by Ethan Strauss, a high-school student in Santa Barbara, not a company with a support desk. To the extent the law allows, SM AI and its developer are not liable for a missed assignment, a wrong due date, a tutor answer that was wrong, lost data, downtime, or anything else that comes from using the app or not being able to. If a court says some part of this page does not hold where you live, the rest still applies.

Changes

If this page changes, the date at the top changes. A change that matters gets a note in the app before it takes effect.
